Nagual Creations was engaged by Hipnose productions to create a unique stage concept for MEO – Portugal’s largest TV, internet and telecommunications provider. The event was the MEO Sudoeste festival, playing host to the likes of Calvin Harris, Post Malone, Rita Ora, Sia and Damien Marley to name but a few, with attendance topping 100,000 making it one of Portugal’s largest music events.
The challenge was to build an 80 foot high stage set (the largest in Portugal) in an extremely windy environment which was innovative and visually striking but also sensitive to the brand identity. The installation needed to be as effective during the day as it was at night and work within a set budget.
Nagual Creations came up with a solution which turned the problem of the wind to our advantage: the set was to resemble two large abstracted tribal heads with head dresses facing in from either side of the stage to reflect the festival’s ‘Join The Tribe’ marketing campaign. 138 beach flags up to 5 metres in length, in the brand colours created two dynamic sprays and a striking centre piece, which moved with the wind and could be projection mapped at night. These surrounded 6m medalions bearing the branding and giant abstracted tribal faces. The design became the emblem for the festival being printed on all merchandise and gaining considerable coverage on national TV.
MEO said this was the best stage design they have had in the twenty years of the festival, and commissioned its return for the following 6 years each year seeing an evolution of the concept.
